Do you employ someone?

Then listen up, you may need a pension scheme.

When you run a small business, there’s a lot to think about.

Finding staff, checking they can work at your business, paying them, taxes, insurance – the list goes on.

But there’s one crucial thing a lot of new business owners miss – if you employ anyone, even just one person, you absolutely must have a workplace pension scheme for eligible employees. And we mean have to.

You need to set up a workplace pension for your staff.

It’s all down to something called auto enrolment. These rules state you have to set up a workplace pension scheme for any eligible employees you have.

Now to qualify as an eligible employee, staff need to be aged between 22 and state pension age, and earning more than £10,000 a year from you. Even if your employees aren’t eligible for auto enrolment, you’ll have to put them into a workplace pension if they ask. There is an annual declaration thereafter.

Telling your staff about pensions shouldn’t get in the way of running your business.

Check that your workplace pension provider takes care of communicating the right information to your staff, telling them their options and rights.

Oh, and you can’t just set a workplace pension and forget about it either.

You have to tell The Pensions Regulator that you’ve met your auto enrolment duties. This is called a ‘declaration of compliance‘ and you have to do it within 5 months.
