What contributions should be paid to staff on maternity leave/parental leave?

When on parental leave (maternity leave, paternity leave or adoption leave), employers should continue to pay contributions based on employee’s pensionable earnings before they started the parental leave as long as they remain in the scheme.

Employee contributions will be based on their actual earnings during the parental leave – for example Statutory Maternity Pay.

If an employee decides to take a period of unpaid leave after their paid parental leave, contributions may cease for both employer and employee, unless their contract of employment states otherwise.
