What is my staging/duties start date?

Your staging date for auto enrolment depends on the size of your largest PAYE scheme as at April 2012. To look up your staging date, you’ll need to know the your PAYE reference. If you don’t know your PAYE reference, it can be found on a P6/P9 coding notice or on your white payslip booklet P30BC.

You can find your company’s auto enrolment staging date using our staging date calculator.

Any business that employed staff on or after 1st October 2017 has auto enrolment duties as soon as they employ someone for the first time. This is known as the “duties start date”. These businesses do not have staging dates.

Not all businesses will necessarily have eligible employees but all employers will have auto enrolment duties. You can find out what your duties are by visiting: www.tpr.gov.uk/onlinetool
